Lawrence Webb has been a leader in his community for over 20 years serving as a member of the Falls Church City Council and School Board and was selected twice to serve as the chair of the school board. During his tenure as chairman, he worked to strengthen ties and increased confidence with constituents by meeting with community groups to discuss issues openly. Also during his tenure, the school system hired a new superintendent, improved the transparency of the budget process and collaborated with the City Council to finance a new environmentally sustainable high school.
Lawrence has been active in education for over 20 years serving as an admission officer at three universities: Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA, University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA and currently at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Appointed by Governors Warner and Kaine to the State Board for Correctional Education, Lawrence contributed on the state level to oversee the school system across the Commonwealth in the Department of Corrections and Department of Juvenile Justice rising to both vice chair and chair of the board. During his term, all high schools in the Department of Juvenile Justice received their state accreditation. Additionally, he has worked to secure the rights for LGBTQ individuals in the Commonwealth by serving on the board of Equality Virginia.
After much thought, my family and I are excited to announce my decision to run for an At-Large seat on the Fairfax County School Board.
I served as an elected leader in the City of Falls Church for nearly 12 years – first on the City Council and then on the School Board. I was selected twice by my colleagues to be School Board Chair. When my partner and I moved to Springfield in Fairfax County, I left the Fall Church School Board and began to actively engage in grassroots issues facing the Fairfax County community. I decided to run for the Fairfax County School Board to continue to build upon a school system that is a national standard, as well as, defend the system from ongoing attacks by those that do not have the best interests of our students in mind.
The pandemic has taken a toll on students, families, teachers and staff. Having served as a school board member during the pandemic I know firsthand the tough decisions that had to be made during a period no one knew what to expect. We are still feeling the impact of those decisions and must have leaders who are willing to listen to students, parents, staff and the community as a whole as we continue to recover.
During my tenure on the Falls Church City School Board, I built a reputation as someone who listens to all sides of an issue to ensure constituents have a voice as decisions were being made. We may not have always come to the same conclusion; however, my constituents know that I genuinely took what they shared into consideration as the board made decisions.
Fairfax County has some of the best schools in the country and hope that with my leadership experience, I can help make our schools even better for all students regardless of their residence in the county. Specifically, I will work to:
